How to Buy Train and Bus Tickets in Spanish

A ticket conversation has a few separate tasks: choosing a ticket, checking the service, and finding out when or where to travel. Prepare the question that matches the information you need.

Spanish phrases and English meanings
SpanishEnglish
Un boleto de ida, por favor.A one-way ticket, please.
¿A qué hora sale el tren? What time does the train leave?
¿Este autobús va al centro?Does this bus go downtown?
¿En qué parada me bajo?At which stop do I get off?
¿Dónde compro los boletos?Where do I buy tickets?
Un boleto de ida y vuelta.A round-trip ticket.

Choose the journey type

The phrase table distinguishes a one-way request from a round-trip ticket. They are alternatives, not two parts of one order. In the example, Ana and Carlos ask about different options. Notice the journey type before using either expression at a counter.

Check the route and stop

A departure-time question asks when the train leaves. The bus question instead checks whether that service goes downtown. Asking where to get off is another task again. Sort these questions by the information you want, then rehearse one short counter exchange rather than reciting all of them at once.

Try a short conversation

An illustrative practice scene using the phrases above. Pauses leave room for replies that may vary in a real conversation.

Ana, at the ticket counter
Un boleto de ida, por favor.A one-way ticket, please.
Ana, checking departure
¿A qué hora sale el tren? What time does the train leave?
Carlos, asking about a different ticket
Un boleto de ida y vuelta.A round-trip ticket.

A common mistake to avoid

Do not use the one-way request if you need a return journey. Also distinguish the question about buying tickets from the question about your stop; their answers will give different information.

A note for real life

The app uses boleto here. Its category note identifies billete as common in Spain and boleto as common in Latin America. Transport vocabulary and ticket systems vary locally.

PICO’S PRACTICE TIP

Your turn

Choose one-way or round-trip. Read the matching request, then ask the departure-time question. Switch to a bus scene and choose the question that checks its destination.
